[Closed] Covid Commute Options
Seeking opinion…
I’m still working at the moment and I have about 65mile round trip for my commute.
On Fridays we just work for the morning, 8-12
I was thinking I might drive part way, park the car and cycle along the cycle path for the last 15 miles, and then back again at the end of the day.
Gets some exercise in and makes the most of my short day.
Is this ok?
Yes
Sounds reasonable to me.
That would be my normal type of commute. And one I've done once since lockdown when I needed to go to office (key worker but can mostly work from home). My opinion is that it is fine, its a commute and you're on your own.
Word of warning though, the cycle bit of my commute is on Bristol cyclepaths and it was the most I've been at risk (or risking others) the whole of lockdown as the path was very busy with all sorts of people, mostly brilliant, but with large share of others not aware of their surroundings. If I have to go in the office again I'll drive the lot and save my exercise for somewhere more isolated later (or stop in quiet spot on way home)
Cheers and be safe.
Yep, perfectly reasonable.
The cycling part is along the Tarka Trail, Torrington to Barnstaple.
By most accounts, its been pretty quiet during the week, and it will be before 8am.
I would say it is in breach of the letter of the guidelines but not the spirit if you keep away from everyone while you do it. Seems OK to me, just ride extra safely.
breach of the letter of the guidelines
really, i must have misunderstood travel to work and/or being allowed to exercise
I would say it is in breach of the letter of the guidelines
I'm not sure how, so intrigued as to why you think so
Because the OP has made it clear the purpose of the ride is for exercise and it won't be local to his home (30 miles away). You can dress it up as "a commute" but it really isn't. But as I also said, it'll be easy to socially isolate so well within the spirit.
Please god, let's not have another thread on this...
Hoist by his own petard
But a combined car/bike commute for environmental reasons with no intention or admission of using it for exercise will be fine 👍
I thought this would be a link to this superb video
So if the OP was to ride the whole commute would that be ok?
On the couple of times I have been to the office during lock down I have ridden the 20 miles each way, like I have regularly for years. Why would I want to drive when the roads are so quiet? I say go for it OP.
That pattern of commuting is very much like mine, I generally do it 2-3 days a week. Personally it doesn't sit well with me at the moment, I think once I'm isolated in my van, I'm better just to stay that way until I get to work. I'll do my exercise later after I get home.
If you're coming on here for validation OP, maybe you really think the same? IMHO of course, and it seems I'm in a minority.
Definitely do it when the lockdown is eased thought, brilliant way to commute.
edit - if I could ride the whole trip, that's different, I'd do that but it's too far.
It's a similar story for me - I usually drive into town, drop Jr off at nursery then ride into work (~4 miles). The problem with this is that I'm not sure people will understand the need for a bike on the roof of my car and will wrongly assume I'm going somewhere nice to ride.
I think your plan is fine FWIW.
You can dress it up as “a commute” but it really isn’t.
It is if he's travelling to work.
The mode of transport is completely down to him, and if he wants to change it half way to optimise the health benefits and make his day more enjoyable, then why not?
Unless of course the route is very busy and you'll be in contact with lots of people, then it might be inadvisable. But it's far from in breach of anything, it's essential travel.
