Hi all,

I've just been tasked with organizing some charity volunteering for my team (about 20 people max).

Trouble is, from what I've heard, corporate groups are more of a hindrance than a help, hence the charges that charities levy for "volunteering".

I've been asked to keep the cost to a minimum though, plus it seems if we are not doing anything genuinely useful, then it's nothing more than a jolly out of the office for a day.

So...anyone got any good ideas of what we could do that would be worthwhile enough that we wouldn't have to pay to do it, especially around the Bristol or London areas?

Leon

Litter pick. Just go for a walk and pick up a ton of litter in a park or something.

We do things like litter picks, gardening in public spaces. We also tend to go and paint things a lot but then we are a paint company so it fits well.

it needs to be with an actual charity to qualify (my company has a policy for allowing charity volunteering).

Leon, I'd look and see what skills your team have and how could 1 day of your team's skills be useful to a charity rather than just be offering yourself as unskilled labour which is going to take a significant proportion of the time to brief and "train" for H&S stuff for even the most basic tasks.

We've done heathland clearance, clearing out sheds/painting/gardening/odd jobs at a wildlife centre, painting and repairs on a scout hut, building a raised garden at a primary school and various garden/play area jobs at a nursery.

Any rivers near by? I've organised a river clean up for the waters of leith that runs right past our office.

Its hard work but involves dicking about in waders, its something people stopped a commented on how good it was to see the effort being put in. It was right next to the office so we had maximum time doing the work. Organised through "the friends of" charity.
