[Closed] Considering a SS Scandal, any good?

I'll be selling my ti frame as V-brakes just don't cut the mustard round here. As the disc wheels, brakes and all the other bits are already piled up, I'm considering a Scandal as a lightweight SS disc frame. Does anybody ride on rigid? What is it like? Any good? Should I or should I not?

Just built one and got out for the first time today. It's bloody brilliant. I ditched an Orange ST4 and it's XT drivetrain for a few choice parts from Charlie the Bike Monger and a second hand scandal frame. I think I prefer hardtails and after doing a lot more road work, I've become a lightweight MTBer rather than a heavy bouncy bike rider and it fits the bill perfectly. Silent operation, cheap and easy to maintain. Light up the hills and surprisingly plush down the rocks too. I'm running Rubber Quens which might add a bit of comfort but it works for me.

I love my Scandal. It works really well with the On-One carbon fork. I'm quite happy to do 24 hour solo efforts on it.

However, I'm not particularly fast these days so take that into account.

It gets changed around a bit:

epicyclo, what ratio are you running as I can't see a tensioner and it appears a geared frame?
I'll be adding a Salsa steel fork, On-One CF one is gone to another owner. And possibly a 29er wheel, I already have it.

Ive had 2. They are super sweet frames....actually pretty flexy and comfy. First one was set up rigid with high end bits, the thing weighed 18.4lbs!!

The pink one was rigid initially but I swapped out a Fox 130. 23lbs with olgd stuff thrown on.

There's a new Scandal out in Feb/March with swop'able drop outs.

get one you won't regret it, the slot dropouts area a doddle to use, the only thing you need to watch is that some brakes don't play very well with the inside rear triangle mounting points. Magura julies and some avid cable jobbos from memory.

if you get a 26" wheel frame they go very well with a rigid carbon fork and a 29er front wheel as well.

I think I will (if it all works out) buy the regular one as the price is silly low. I know the sliding dropouts are better but can't afford a new one and haven't seen one in the classifieds recently in 16".

I've been running BB7s on mine with no problems. Both road and mtb versions depending on which handlebar I was using.

epicyclo, yours is a 29er isn't it?
Is it a geared frame? Looks like one. What gear are you using?

It's the single speed frame. What may be confusing you is a little detail at the rear - it's a plate I made up to enable me to separate the frame to fit belt drive.

I use various gearing. Summer or dry conditions is usually 32/18. Soggy with knobbly tyres is 32/22 and I'd prefer to go lower still or fit fatter tyres if that was possible.

I'm wondering if I should go for a geared version as I have all the bits incl. a tensioner, a SS version which I can't afford or a 2nd hand Cotic. I like On-Ones, I want a light bike but I also like steel. Hmmm, I'll give myself a few days to ponder over the idea.
