I have just fitted an old ThudBuster to my Pegasus, the ST version & I found my LT version which I'm now considering putting on my C456, so which bits have you got & not heard mentioned for a while?*

Also, Danny McAskill posted a picture of a yellow DCD the other day, that gave me flashbacks to my beloved 1996 GT Tequesta.

The Crud Claw!

I had one of those. Not convinced it was any use at all.

It acted as another brake, when it filled with small stones and completely jammed the cassette up. There's one in North Wales somewhere, around CyB, thrown by my mate when it jammed for the umpteenth time. I don't condone littering, but that stupid thing had no place anywhere near a bike.

Hite Rite. Now there was a thing. Utterly useless unless your seatpost was a size too small.

There was a rear mech tensioner thing, a steel arm that stuck out of the back of the mech with a long spring attached to the bottom of the cage. Of course, that could never get caught in foliage etc and get ripped off. Oh no. 😆

Probably would not use if I had massively wide bars

Shimano Parallax Hubs - the hubs that would never die still got one on an old bike that just gets grease and new ball bearings every so often.

Torsion bars that attached to v-brake bosses and the wheel dropouts to add a disc mount to frames that didn't have them.

TransX stems that were barely machined from a block of aluminium.

One thing that made me smile this weekend was someones tip for a shoe box lid slotted behind the cassette so you GT85 didn't get on the discs. Used to get a handy plastic disc that kept cassette crud off rotors, until people started calling them dork discs and removing them.

Answer Pro-Taper Bars, there was a time when these were the alternative to Eastons if you were in any way 'gnarr'. No one ran anything else!

Another 'not a component'

The Woolly Hat Shop.

Needed a part the other day, google, sort by price lowest first, and there they are! Remember the days when they were the first place I'd look for cheap shimano parts (and A2Z bits IIRC too)

Shimano Parallax Hubs - the hubs that would never die still got one on an old bike that just gets grease and new ball bearings every so often.

All 'parallax' denoted was a beefier hub shell (I assume it refered to the shell being parallel to the axle, rather than a parabola like old hubs) to cope with suspension forks. Same (great) bearings as the current hubs.

I took a barely worn set off my SS a few months ago. They had been on for some time and hardly any wear. The desernible lack of grip may have had something to do with their longevity.

Rapid rise was the best idea that didn't take hold IMHO. It just worked so much better smooth changes as things got steeper and you were putting effort in, why did they give it up...

Elastomer forks seem to make more sense than heavy coils for budget gear.

Biopace rings but they are having another go at those I think.

Can you imagine 11 or 12 speed Rapid Rise? *wibble*

*edit* - It was given up as it was tied to the mad 'dual control' brake lever shifting idea they had for a while

I thought it was 'shadow' that killed it off as the cable entry would be all wrong, for a while there were shadow and rapid rise versions of XT?

It was nice, but I think it solved a problem for clunky 8s drivechains that the smaller gaps in 10s don't have, if you forced a 8 or 9s chain it would snap, I can't remember the last 10s chain I snapped and it shifts down much quicker even under pressure.

Shock boots

Got some Judy XC forks in the shed that still have the boots on. Springs are completely gone on them, as soon as you sit on the bike they sag almost the full 63mm of travel.

Not been able to bring myself to chuck them out yet.

Can you still get headsets with grease ports? Had a WTB Greaseguard that ran for years.

gripshift

Oi! Still happily running Gripshift on the posh bike here. The cheapo BSO ones are rubbish, yep, but then so are cheapo BSO triggers. The XX1 gripshift are smashing, I was glad of mine at the Dyfi, they're especially good in really crap conditions. 9-speed X0 gripshift was indestructible, still got a set somewhere. Light too.

Love Rapid rise - have 2x XT ones in the shed (and RR alfine)

Missus also loves them as she just has to remember to use her thumb to go up gears on both sides of the handlebars.

I've recently fitted barends onto my Cotic for a long distance ride I'm doing in a few weeks, and just about to (as soon as the shim arrives) install my Thudbuster on it as well.

The Reverb is usually fine on it but I'm going to be be sitting down a lot more on this journey so thought I'd go for something my back will approve of.

anyone still using magura rim brakes?

It was given up as it was tied to the mad 'dual control' brake lever shifting idea
Rapidrise iteration was binned off yeah but sure I've read that way back dérailleurs were all RR before that campag fella decided he wanted to up shift at the front and down shift at the back at the same time (or vice versa) by pushing (or pulling) the downtube shifters together, so changed the dérailleur to suit. Dunno how accurate that is.
It was nice, but I think it solved a problem for clunky 8s drivechains that the smaller gaps in 10s don't have
have recently gone 1x10 on one of my bikes, 9spd RR still has slicker shifts.
It's also causing confusion when I switch to my RR bikes, might have to bin the RR mechs 🙁

All four of my bikes have rapid rise mechs *, yet another reason to run them into the ground

Apart from the tandem, which causes no end of gear change errors

Good to see so many Rapid Rise fans.

For me it went directly from XT 3x9 rapid rise (without silly flappy paddle brake levers) to 1x11 SRAM.

All the ones in-between didn't really add anything imo. Never saw much advantage to 2x or 10sp.

My understanding is the dual control was a single lever you pulled to brake and you could push down or up THE SAME LEVER to change gears.

I had a go at ~2004 SSMM on a S-works epic with it on...

wash your mouth out, when gripshift were dead light but widely reported to be shite as soon as they saw a bit of mud waveys were simple, had an extra flange to help with front mech shifts and were cheap as chips. Their dirt derraileurs were pretty good too, AFAIK the first to use front cable entry.
