Sometimes I have enough of it, sometimes I don't.

I can train to get fitter,
I can diet to get lighter

what is it I can do to gain commitment?

(in a pinning it sort of way)

Do you mean comittment to training or comittment on steep / techy ground?

If its the latter then find a place with lines and features within and just without your comfort zone and practice practice practice.

relax relax relax

practice, comfort, experience really so in some ways you can train for it.

However even now still bottle things I have ridden before if I'm not feeling right, sometimes just a fraction less speed and the bike stops in the rocks rather than sailing over them.

The other option is to find someone who can address your technique and your brain together.

Saturday... the bike was over the rocks but the bars were stuck in the bushes. That was a case of over commitment.
