Keen to give it a shot again on the mtb, current flat pedals are great but perhaps too big for ruts etc!

CRC have 5.10 Hellcats @£75 or I've been happy with Shimano AM41 in the past (so could get the equivelant). UK8 if you've spotted any bargains!

Whats the best pedal for under £50? Are the caged Shimanos (545 or 647) any good for "enduro" riding- more natural Scottish trails etc (on Harris and Lewis for the summer). Some support for the shoe and an option for grip when not clipped in would be good- I presume this is possible with some of the caged offerings? I know Crank Brothers look good but £££ as are the more modern Time offerings.

Second hand is an option so hunting ebay etc as we speak

I've got some caged m424s that I've been using on and off for about 10 years, no complaints.

The cheap shimano pedals work as well as any others and last well IME, unless you have a need for Time etc.

Shoes - worth spending on something that works for you, cheap shoes are crap, high end ones aren't worth it.

I wanted to try SPDs , so went with Shimano AM5s from CRC and M530 pedals for 20 quid from Halfords 🙂
Shoes seem fine, to a bit of getting used to but now they've worn in are lots better.

I've only ever used Shimano 520 and 540.
Bombproof, never need to do anything to them and cheap as chips.

Shoe-wise, again prefer Shimano over other brands I've had. £20 for pedals gives you a decent budget for shoes though 🙂
