Last year I got a helmet and some decent lights on Cyclescheme and the agreement has just concluded meaning I can open a new one.
The Cyclescheme site states than allowable accessories package "include":
Cycle helmets
Bells
Lights, including dynamo packs
Mirrors and mudguards to ensure riders visibility is not impaired
Cycle clips and dress guards
Panniers, luggage carriers and straps to allow luggage to be safely carried
Child safety seats
Locks and chains to ensure cycle can be safely secured
Pumps, puncture repair kits, cycle tool kits and tyre sealant to allow for minorย repairs
Reflective clothing along with white front reflectors and spoke reflectors
...but it also says the list is not exhaustive.
What's got me thinking a bit is that Rapha is now on Cyclescheme and their page on the Cyclescheme website states "You can spend your Cyclescheme certificate on almost all of our range of clothing and accessories".
So hardly and of the clothing looks "reflective" to me and there's any amount of kit on there - does clothing include shoes for example? It's not that I want to buy a Rapha bundle but their inclusion does seem to open up a world of opportunity.
Does anyone have any experience of equipment/accessories that has been allowed or refused on a Cyclescheme voucher?
I've had at least some of this stuff Track pump, cleaning stuff, lube, locks, gloves, bottles & cages, tools, bike mounted pump,
I'm sure shorts and bibs would count as protective, so would surely qualify?
You could argue the same for windproof or waterproof clothing.
If you're cold and wet then you could argue that's it's unsafe and unhealthy.
I used my voucher to buy get a load of bits for a self build:
- wheels
- groupset
- discs
- pedals
and a few "accessories" like frame bags
As I completed it online with a large national company, there wasn't really an opportunity for comments when I went to pick the bits up.
Yeah I have seen the accessories package described as "safety equipment", which surely brings in body armour, maybe glasses?
Had accessories only package a couple of times. Had gloves, SPD shoes, padded undershorts, gilet and waterproof jacket. Doesn't have to be reflective from my experience.

It's supposed to be kit you'd need for riding comfortably to work...so getting body armour wouldn't be in the spirit of it!
Do you still have to pay a final valuation fee on accessories? The fair value of a used helmet is bugger all.
I've bought a bike and a buggy for getting the kiddies to nursery on the commute
Didn't know you could get an accessories only package!
Currently building up a frame so Would I be able to get a crank set and brake set for example?
Be handy to spread the cost so I could get better kit..

It would if I consider myself in danger from traffic.

So far as I'm aware the final valuation applies to whatever you spent your voucher on...

Out of interest, how recently? Just asking as it's a subject that keeps coming up and a strict reading of the rules would have components etc excluded and no-one I know has ever managed to get a company to let them do this, but people keep popping up saying it's possible...
Clothes definitley qualify, rapha now accept the vouchers ๐ฏ

It was earlier this year... feel free to PM if you want more info.
Yep, I did an 'accessories only' C2W with Evans before Christmas, I got an Exposure Strada 1200 and a new helmet.
I'm going to get a new set of wheels later this year when the current 12 month period comes to an end.
Evans also said Oakleys would be acceptable!
Somewhere along the line, someone has to justify to HMRC that items qualify. In some cases I guess that's the retailer, in others it's maybe the scheme provider and in some it's the employer. At no point does HMRC give a stuff about your interpretation of "safety related items" ...
So based on input from this thread and online chats with a couple of retailers, I've applied for my voucher.
My purchase will be a mix of clothes, shoes, body armour and tools. Sadly they drew the line at a bike travel bag.
I used a very good LBS that put a generic bike worth a grand on the invoice and let me spend the money on what i wanted in store. I'll be doing the same again in about 3 months time.
Based on the above, prescription riding glasses (actually GENUINELY for the commute) would fall well into the "safety gear" category.
Is it possible to purchase prescription Oakleys via any stores that take vouchers, or from Oakley / RXSport / Cilary Blue etc directly ?
