just been cleaning a bike up that's been in the shed since November and it's got some surface rust
can I put it in something to clean it up?

A very light rust which rubs off with your fingers id remove it and brush it down woth a toothbrush and degreaser, If it doesnt come off with your fingers i'd bin it.
Unless its a commuter that is
