I'm off to Cheddar for a few days next week. Anybody got any suggestions for good MTB routes, say 15-25 miles,we don't mind a bit of a climb? And how are conditions around there at the moment?

Thanks for any suggestions.

Route wise, 15-20 miles in any direction from Chedder will involve swimming. The gorge has been shut for 3-4 weeks (still drivable, but take your time, theres a lot if gravel) and the ground simply could not be any wetter. After the last 48 hrs rain, I'm assuming road has once again changed into a river.

Having said that, it'll still be a laugh!

I was over there today, the road down the Gorge is closed to cars and likely to be for some time, there's a small river running down it, it's washed loads of rocks and stones across the road and damaged the tarmac in places.

Most of the off road tracks running down to the road have pretty much all turned into rivers and with more rain forecast it's not likely to improve anytime soon.

I really wouldn't bother. It's just all waterlogged at the moment. Maybe pop up to Bristol (30 min drive) and go to Ashton Court and Leigh Woods.

You can download the bad ass bikes guide though which shows you the common/easy to find trails.

Road bike at this time. The levels are excellent if you have a sturdy road bike. Flat scenic network of minor roads and almost no cars. Look at google earth. Head for wedmore ashcot Glastonbury wells and cheddar

Thanks for all your feedback. It sounds even worse than the Surrey Hills at the moment, so I think I'll take the advice to head over to the Ashton Court /Leigh Woods area.
