I was reading a review in one of the road bike mags the other week which said something like "build up with the under-rated Mon Chasseral wheels as they're good value particularly now they're available for ~£400 on the web". I didn't think much about it at the time but I feel like spending some money on my road bike. If these are light, quick and (importantly) white, I might get a set. But I can't find them at anything close to £400.

Any help?

May be they meant £400 per wheel!

Watch out if your looking at very light wheels set, save them for the big events because they will bend or brake too easily. Use your old wheels as training wheels and fit the race wheels for a flyer on race day.
Thought you would be looking for a very comfy saddle too? 🙂

When I was looking at new wheels for my road bike I had a look at the Mon Chasseral. Seem a good wheel but cheapest I found them was about £450 from total cycling I think - but the weren't in stock. Went for some mavic ksyerium sl premiums instead.

Oh and I wasn't too sure on the white thing.

they get mixed reviews and the hubs on their own would be knocking on £400 these days.

I've just had a set of Ambrosio Excellights on 28h Hope Pro3s handbuilt for £375, just to give you an alternative.

What you on about Higgo? I used Bontrager Race X Lites on my cross bike without ever bending them, they got hammered around Ashton Court regularly. I had some XXX Lites on the road bike for a year or so, they're 1100g and never went out of true.

The Mon Chasserals are just an excuse to charge lots for what is essentially a stock wheel, 240s on RR1.1s with Aerolites. I'd sooner have some Bontragers frankly. Just not Mavic IMO.

Agree about the Mavics - for some reason they just don't do anything for me.

And I know the Mon Chasseral is all stock parts but it's the white rims, you see. I know the sensible option would be getting something handbuilt but it's those white rims.

Higgo, we sell Mon Chasseral's and usually have them in stock, but can't promise. Can't remember what price we do them for though! Give us a call tomorrow - Epic Cycles 01885 410641. They're a cracking wheelset, as long as you're not too heavy? Regards Ben.

I'm not gonna disagree with you, white is pimp! I quite want some white Tune hubs with white Stan's rims and white DT spokes now they're doing them all, pimp and light-ish! mmmmm

One of my mates has a set. He like em, but he also mentioned he has to get em re-trued every few months. Doesn't seem like a good buy to me when you can get a really good set of bombproof handbuilts for £400 which would only be 100grams or so heavier.

I've got a set of White LTA's on Velocity rims that are 4 years old and have done 10K miles. The rear's never been touched and is still perfectly true. I rebuilt the front last year, but only because I smashed a big pothole doing 30. They're still on the original bearings too.

Hmmmm..... so there's a rider weight limit is there?

It would appear I'm 5kg too well built for them. I tend to ride on some pretty poor roads (Peaks) with cattle grids etc so maybe I'll look elsewhere.

But then my current wheels (with less spokes, Fulcrum Evo5) take everything I throw at them. There's one cattlegrid that I always end up hitting at speed with what seems like a huge gap between where the road ends and the grid begins. It always makes me wince as I clatter over it.

i know somebody who relaced the rear with slightly thicker spokes (comps instead of revolutions) as he wanted a stiffer wheel.
you could always build the same from stock parts except they wouldn't be white.

they do look pimp though luckily i picked mine up for £190 hardly used.
i didn't think there was a weight limit though? (not that it will affect me)
