Never, ever owned a full susser.
Fancy trying one, just to see what I'm missing.

Will be swapping bits over from a Rock Lobster hardtail.
Only have 100mm Rebas (not sure if they can be extended to 120) so probably looking for a decent set of Revelations too.

Might look at full bikes if cheap enough.

I think about this every year or so, but there seems to be quite a few about at the mo.
Will probably hang on for a bit until things get even cheaper, but it's be nice to get a shortlist worked out.

Criteria:
Needs to be cheap.
Need to be able to still get the bushings/bearings.
Did I mention it needs to be cheap?

Shortlist so far:

Boardman of some sort.
Spesh Stumpy or early Enduro.
Giant Anthem or Trance, including X models.
Cannondale Prophet.
Kona Dawg or one of the shorter travel models - Hei Hei?

Anything obvious I've missed?

Thanks.

Sam, thanks, but it would appear that we define the word 'cheap' in very different ways.

That's a pretty decent short list. I'd probably knock the Enduro off. Coming from a hardtail you might find that a bit too unpedally. Stumpjumper is a good call. Great all rounder and they haven't changed the geometry that much. I'm not a fan of Kona for full sus. Complicated linkages for pretty basic suspension. You can pick up Marins pretty cheaply but the bearings are a slightly odd size. Still standard but harder to get.

I often wonder what happens to older FS frames.
The old Enduro was a classic.
The Giant Trance always looks a good buy these days still.

Oooh, good point.
I'd forgotten those.

On the list.

I'm hoping they're taking up a lot of otherwise useful space in someone's life.

Prophet bearings are easily available and there's only two of them.

I sold my 06 marin alpine trail for £170 earlier this year, with bearings that were less than 2 years old, a pushed shock, offset bushes and Angleset. Replaced it with a blur 4x that I paid £325 for. Should be loads of cheap similar frames about.
Giant trance+1. Loads of them on fleabay

OP, how cheap is cheap what's your max budget?
Oh and what size?
Out of that list only the Anthem would work with your forks.
EDIT just re read about Rev forks....
I have a frame that will work with 100-120mm forks, depends what size you want.

After similar thoughts of a first full susser I bought an Anthem last year. Having rode only hardtails for decades, I thought FS was for sissys. Oh, how wrong.... The trail hardtail is about to be sold for a longer travel bike!
I can thoroughly recommend the switch from hardtail to an Anthem X - feels a lot more capable than a similar 100mm xc hardtail does, doesn't bob about on the climbs and very surprised how much less fatigue I feel on longer rides. You can get them cheap as chips in 26er form too.

How cheap?
Dunno - I'd like to keep it as cheap as poss, couple of hundred or so.
A quick ebay trawl suggests I might be better hanging on for a while 'till things get a bit cheaper.

Smallish frame, I ride a 15/16 inch hardtail and a 52 cm road bike.

How about a Santa Cruz super light?

Added to list - if it was good enough for Mr Worland etc.....
Thanks.

In that case op I have a rocky mountain ets-x 70 frame.

This has adjustable rear travel 3.5"-4.5" by means of a quick release lever.

I've had it powder coated black.

The fox shock has a complete lockout on it- none of this compression damping rubbish meaning if you want to go hardtail mode you can.

You could also use you rebas on it without too much geometry compromise.

£175 based in huddersfield

Trance or Anthem would be my choice for a 100m fork. Not the Trance X though, too much travel.

Seem to last well and the build quality was really good (I had a few).

Check the head tube length against your steerer though, they were ridiculously long on older Giants.

Older Santa Cruz Heckler? Again, like the Prophet only two bearings to worry about. Built to last and very effective. I used a 2006 model in the Alps this year with a set of 140 Revs, it did remarkably well. As it happens......it is no longer required and may be available!

TBH even though I may have a vested interest in the above, I would also recommend you look at Anthem frames-remarkably capable bikes for their travel, although check the seat tube/top tube junction carefully on any older frame as I have known of two that failed there.

I have a medium trance, resprayed, float rp2, straight steerer, 135 qr rear end (2010 frame). Air can recently serviced.

I don't know how cheap is cheap for you though?

(I do have a set of blackbox 15mm revelations as well that I probably also need to sell)

email in profile if interested

Otherwise, I would look for a Pitch, older Stumpy FSR, another Trance; maybe a trek fuel ex?

On the "worst bike ever" thread, the spesh fsr range was a pretty common candidate. I had one and hated it.
As a first venture into a full suss, I'd probably avoid.

I have a 2000 Orange Sub 5 that owes me very little (£75?). It is a 16". Had it with 120mm and a low stack headset but I think it was based around 100mm forks. Been hung in shed for a couple of years now

I picked up a 2012 orange ST4 frame earlier in the year for £300. Great, very underrated bike.

I built up a rift zone a couple of years ago as a training bike. The frame and shock was 200-odd.

One of these frames (not mine):

I've got a morewood ndiza here 16inch seat tube etc 100 mm travel, would be happy at 100 or 120mm travel up front.
I would say it's not to unlike a short travel orange five.
Might be of interest to you. Bit more than your looking though £300 posted but includeds a hope headset, seat clamp and a new seat post.
Pm carlfragle@aol.com
If of interest.

Cheap 2011 super light on eBay but it's a medium. Only 199 and no bids yet.

Often find myself in same boat as op and I would go for an anthem x with 120mm fork.

Not sure how good your DIY skills are or how well you trust them, so i'd make an allowance of say £100 to take it to your LBS on get them to do a once over if your building it...

so it turns out my handling was a bit ropey as i had 2 crown race's fitted when i 'built' my last frame up 😳

for the record that was a cube stereo 2011 thats been great - frame and fork, shifter, headset and BB sub £200 - just keep an eye out.
Prices can get a little out of hand though an x12 axle meant hub converters were needed, new bearing respray etc.

Why dont you try hiring different bikes, PABA @ FOD has nukeproof cubes etc for £30 a day which will help give you an idea. Failing that im in glos so you can come down and have a go on my anthem and cube to give you an idea

OP, Mark etc i've got a large 19" stump jumper FSR for sale 07 vintage.
£175 frame, it's had a full complement of new bearings and a full shock service and about 3 hours use since.
There's an add in my history somewhere or drop me a mail for details.
Cheers

Pretty certain my mate will be selling his Santa Cruz Blur XC it's a medium, he also has a set of F32's set at 120mm travel

And another mate may well be selling his Santa Cruz Superlight in large too, he has a variety of forks to suit

The old Enduro was great in it's day, but they need a longer fork than 100mm and chances are that the inevitable chainstay breakage isn't far away.

06 Spesh Enduro is a good shout!

Can be run at 120-130 as thats what the lower end models were sold with but if you get the elite/sworks you could upgrade to 150-160 just sell/swap the rebas for a pair of vintage 36's like i did 😛

Frame and shock was £250 iirc (came with an rp23), way to much bike for most of my riding but i really wanted to build an FS and had always lusted after an S-Works :O
