My move to beautiful Berkshire means I am within riding distance of a local BMX park. The idea is to sneak in when there are no kids around to watch me fall and learn how to ride BMX.

The problem is, I don't know what's good and what's not when it comes to a BMX bike. I have a budget of £150 and have been looking at classifieds on Pinkbike for bikes 15-20 miles from where I live, but I have no idea what I'm looking for. Could you please help me STW? I need this thing in my life!

Good move mate! I had my first go on a BMX at Rush Skatepark, Stroud last Friday night and was instantly hooked. After a bit of research and a max budget of £250 I'm now waiting on one of these to turn up (black 21" one):

http://www.winstanleysbmx.com/product/43262/Haro_5001_2012_BMX_Bike

Check out the link below for all of their clearance stuff:

Quite a few around the £150-£160 mark. As with all bikes you'll get a higher spec (eg chromoly frame/forks) if you buy second-hand, depends what you want and how long you are willing to wait.

If you're over 6' try and look for a top tube of 21". Normally they're between 20 and 20.5".

I enjoyed it so much, can't ever remember getting such a buzz from MTB'ing. I'm 39 by the way... mid-life crisis ahoy!

Cheers!

I'm happy to buy 2nd hand, but want to get one in a month's time or less.

I'm under 6' by a way so 20" should be cool. Are 20" wheels the way to go?

What do you reckon about something like this:

Yeah a 20 or 20.5 will do nicely I reckon. I'm by no means an expert so I'm not sure if that particular model is any good or not, but for 50 sheets it wouldn't really matter, I'm sure it'd be fine for having a blat round on and learning how to ride a BMX.

Definitely 20" wheels. I read a lot of threads where people were saying get 24" as 20" wheels are twitchy and completely different to MTB wheels that we're all used to. But surely that's the point - it is completely different from MTBing. After about 1 minute of riding my first ever BMX I was used to the small wheels, its part of the fun if you ask me and what makes it such a giggle

Also, Northwind sent me this link on a recent thread of mine about BMX's, he was asking £100 plus postage now, good spec, worth considering:

Buy the cheapest We The People BMX you can find discounted. They may not look like hi-tech, but there is quite a difference between the very cheap "toys" and something designed for throwing around a park. Look for chromoly frame, microdrive (very small chainrings and cogs) and a rear brake, possibly "female" hubs" - bolts go into the axle. Too early for stunt pegs.

We bough a WTP Justice for £300 which was almost half price. It is excellent. Look used, and increase your budget by £50.

TiRed, interesting points.

What is the difference, and do you mean increase my budget for 1st or 2nd hand BMX?

Wilko, I looked at that bike. What is the good stuff about it?

Had a look on BMX Talk, but not finding many complete bikes I like the look of. You got any advice?

I (accidentally, I didn't expect to) won a WeThePeople Justice for £33 off eBay. The back rim doesn't match the original SALT front one but otherwise it was great for the cash, after a bit of maintenance.

Just keep your eye out for a bargain.

Any other brands worth considering apart from WTP?

The picture is ancient, but I've not ridden it since it was taken:

[IMG] [/IMG]

Its a 2007 GT Fueler, Dirt jumpy type bike, with a Chromoly frame I periodically try to sell it on STW, get no takers and decide to just keep it, vowing I'll ride it...

Make me an offer or else I'll only stick it in the classifieds in another 6 months, Mail in profile...

The advice I got was that most brands have good bikes but also bad, whereas WTP don't do anything that's awful. So they're a pretty good option if you know nothing like I did.

So obviously I ignored that and got a scabby Haro, which worked out fine because I enjoyed fixing it, then never rode it, then sold it for what I paid for it a year later- win!

Every time cookeaa posts this I'm tempted; in fact I think I once nearly bought it, but then my car broke, or my bike broke or something, I forget. Everything's always breaking. Same with thisisnotaspoon's Country Bikes one.

Someone buy them so they stop tempting me!

I might just pump up the tyres tonight and ride it round the block, maybe even over to my nearest track...

Then I'll Remember just how unlike a MTB it feels, and that I'm technically an adult now, and compose another Classified ad...

I really can't be arsed finding a box and posting it though...

My neighbour works with a guy who collects scrap at the weekends and told me they had a couple BSO down the yard. Went to have a look and I came home with a (don't get excited) Muddyfox Chaos. Got home, stripped stickers so don't look as bad now and its great fun.

Cheap components, 1 piece crank, wheels made of cheese....but for a tenner its provided me and a mate with hours worth of fun down the park. Also got me some well needed practise trueing wheels. Eg: everytime I come back they are slack and bendy

Thanks to everyone for your advice! I've just bought myself a WTP Trust on eBay for less than £50.

Now I just need to wait a few weeks so I can get it. Really looking forward to this!

Look on PInkbike, don't buy too old as as a lot of the older BMXs are heavy and feel terrible to ride. There are often a lot of 2010 Mongoose/GTs around for a good price and they ride nice. I had an old GT Vertigo from about 2000 and it was horrible to ride.
