Asking on behalf of a friend here who has a 2013 Jekyll 4.
Its running a triple SRAM S1000 crankset which is quite beat up so he is thinking of going to a single ring up front.
Can he keep the esixting crankset and fit a new ring or will he need a new one?
If so if there any recommendations, its using a BB30 bottom bracket and 10s cassette.

Yes just fit a new ring in the middle position. They are all much of a muchness but personally I've had good experience with raceface.

Just checked over his bike and the outer ring states 104BCD, is the following correct:
Remove crankset and rings
Remove derailleur/shifter
fit new 34T chainring to existing crankset with shorter bolts (still need to find these)
Replace crankset and alter chain length?
you can shorten the bolts with a file, don't need to buy new ones. remember being told to "screw them together backwards and file the difference". Not sure if they were being rude 🙂
Are the cranks the type with the removable spider (3 torx bolts on the back) - if so you can remove that and fit a direct mount ring.
direct mount and 104bcd rings are cheap cheap on aliexpress.
I did the same, went with an 11-46 xt cassette, rear mech and shifter.

I think some RaceFace single rings may even come with some.
Charlie the Bike Monger sells short bolts that I can vouch for. ID I think?

Yep.
If you buy some chainrings they come with the thread built in so you can just use half of the existing bolts. I have them on my bike, oval 32t ones. Works Components I think is the brand but could be wrong.
