take off the chainrings and front mech/shifter, buy a narrow/wide ring and thinner chainring bolts, shorten the chain. No huge need for a new, clutch rear mech if you don’t have one already

You can remove all rings and fit ring of choice in the middle position.

This will work but the positioning of the ring and therefore chainline is normally better on a dedicated crank.

It’ll certainly work well enough for you to decide if you like it, and unless you’re a picky bugger you may never want to change it.

Yep – remove all the rings, and fit a single chainring (you probably want a narrow wide one), and you’ll probably neeed some narow chainring bolts to fit it.

Just make sure the ring mactched the BCD of your cranks – most older XTs are 104mm BCD

It isn’t. The middle ring of a 3x crankset is exactly where the ring is on 1x cranks.
