[Closed] Changing oil weight in a coil fork?

Does this have the same effect as changing the coils?

I am looking at a bike with some RC3 Ti forks and the standard spring is likely to be a bit stiff. I was wondering if I could just change the oil rather than drop loads of cash on a lighter spring.

They'll have the capability of going in and out quicker. Whether they have the ability to bow down to your feathery weight is a different matter! how much do you weigh locked and loaded??

Not really, you'll just lose damping.

just buy the right spring. damping =/= springing

You are a light one aren't you!! You may be pushing it to get the affect you want, but I'd give it a go for the sake of a fivers worth of oil!!!!!!!!

I put heavier oil in a Pike fork once, to achieve the opposite effect, ie: to calm down a lighter spring for my weight. Worked ok. It sagged more but I was more intrested in it being plush which it certainly was. I don't think it will have quite the same effectiveness the other way round, as you've got to overcome the spring & even with no compression damping at all it will still be stiff.

Nope, oil will affect compression and rebound damping and you could ramp up the spring curve as well. However, if you want the fork to move more with your weight behind it, you need a lighter spring.

You cna always try the "negative air" trick first...

Changing the damper oil will have zero affect on the spring, if you can't achieve the desiired sag using the preload adjuster then you need a light spring.
