[#3984855]

I've recently fit 2 new Middleburn rings on my girlfriends bike (new chain and cassette too). Old rings were shimano.

In the stand everything shifts fine with no rubbing in any gear and the chain line is fine. The problem is while riding and shifting from the middle to granny ring she gets chain suck every time. The chain is getting stuck between 2 teeth of the middle ring just before it goes onto the granny ring.

I've had chain suck before when rings and chains wear out so I'm aware of the usual causes.

Has anyone had this with specific rings? I'm thinking about filing the edges of the rings slightly to aid shifting but not in a way to cause premature wear. Has anyone got any other ideas?

Stiff link? Jockey wheels? Rear mech ok?

Some things I would check:-
Chain ring(s) aligned to crank correctly.
Correct chain tension.
Chain not too long?
Rear mech spring okay.
Rear mech free to move.

i've had this.

"new" chain? - still covered in that weird sticky grease?

give it a clean, and treat it to some proper oil.

Are you still using a triple chainset? - removing the outer ring means you can run a much tighter chain, and you'll probably not miss the gears you've lost.

Thanks for all the replys. ๐Ÿ˜€

It's sutup with 2 rings in the middle and granny ring position.

I cant find any stiff links and the rear mech feels fine.

The cain is shorter than it would be if she had a tripple chainset...but ill check this again to see if it could be shorter.

The chain just seems to get wedged between teeth...almost like the teeth are too wide but its a slck shift middle ring (everythings 9 speed).

Could just be a dodgy middle ring? A couple of years ago I swapped middle and outer XT rings for Middleburn equivalents (7732 IIRC and 44t outer, slickshift). As 7732 were getting hard to get hold of I got some spare 7732s while I could. The front shifting was fine before but became awful even with a nearly new chain, I investigated and when comparing the (supposedly identical) middle rings I was alarmed at the difference between the width of the teeth. No amount of tweaking would fix the shifting. Suffice to say I went back to XT and the Middleburn all went on fleabay.

I've experienced a similar thing with middleburns (recommended by Royles) who did the work - I should of waited for the race face ring to come back in stock ๐Ÿ˜

New middleburn middle ring on a race face triple crank, new chain, new cassette, horrid chain suck when shifting to the granny, chain suck reduced a bit once the set had worn a bit but never again for me, leave the middleburns for the ss

Thanks for the replys guys. I tried filing down the edges of the teeth a little which helped alot, but 1 in every 4 shifts gets chain suck.

It's my girlfriends bike and she's not an experienced rider yet so i'm gonna change it back to the original tripple Doere rings. Then might try a different brand of chainring. We would ned a 36tooth so might just stick with shimano.
