Staying in Ashby for a couple of nights with work, in 2 weeks time, and wondering if there's any decent riding within about 30minutes drive?

Cannock's probably about 40-50 minutes, Worth the extra distance I reckon, means you don't need a guide too. Although there's some good cheeky stuff in there too I think.

I'm local to this area, you could try Hicks Lodge in the National Forest about 2 miles from Ashby,it has a 8km blue route thats great for a quick blast also loads of trails out of Ashby towards Ticknall,if you're here on a tues. night there is a weekly ride with the local Retrobike guys from Ticknall, very sociable guys who know all the good local trails(you don't have to ride retro either),have a look on they're website.

I went to Uni at Loughborough a few years back, there is some half decent singletrack kicking around in around Outwoods and Beacon Hill, though it rates between quite and fairly on the cheeky meter depending on the time of day.

There were some dirt jumps/pump track type bits around near Shepshed too, though I think I heard they got bulldozed.

That's where i grew up, a while ago... ๐Ÿ™„ Ticknall is the nearest andit's expanded since the National Forest initiative. There's a lot of stuff in Charnwood Forest, esp. Swithland/Cropston area, but a certain cheeky mentality is needed. There's a lot of bridelways that suddenly turn into footpaths halfway along, and so on...

Not a hijack, but i'd love to know if there are any regular rides in the area too. I could do with a reason to take the hardtail over the road bike in future!

Actually, I does occur to me that there should be better riding round there- loads of ex midlands minefields, a bit like areas further north? Less hills and more clay soil I suspect- from experience!

IMHO best riding is over Ticknall way, lots of good XC singletrack linkedto the technical riding in Robins wood where locals have built downhills and berms. There is a ride on Monday evenings from the John Thompson pub in Ingelby from 6.30pm to about 8.30, all very welcome....some stay for beers afterwards :D. Ride doesn't go on bank holidays or if it's a monsoon....otherwise we'll be there
