MECHANICAL QUESTION:

About ten kilometres into the ride today my bike developed savage chain sucsuck in the granny ring, forcing me to man up and finish mist of the ride in top cog. All the teeth are present on both rings, neither are bent and I can see no obvious solution, I even tried turning the chain over. I've not had this problem on this bike before and I'm well and truly stumped, any advice much appreciated.

Cheers ,

Alex

Was it wet? I used to find sometimes if my chain had no lube left on it the wet and mud would make it suck like a sod until I trickled some more lube on it.

It was very wet but the Cain was doused in wet lube right before we left?

Check the sides of the teeth on the chainring for burrs. These can have the effect of making the ring a bit wider and then grip the narrower inner plates of the chain and not release them off the bottom of the ring. It can be made worse by dirty conditions.

Clean the burrs off with a round file and you are good to go again.

I've found the new Shadow+ mechs seem to dampen (basically kill) all signs of chainsuck.. recommnded.

Check for stiff or twisted links in the chain too. Last time I had it happen I had a link that was slightly out of true.

My bets the lube wore off and it was the mud water combo.......I'm talking long ride, not an hour in mucky conditions. I found best solution in all honesty was to go 1x9/10/11.......no more irritating chai suck ever!

^^^^ if putting on a new chain it is likely that unless quite new and unworn, your cassette will need replacing also.

Check the sides of the teeth on the chainring for burrs...

+ 1

This was enough to make the granny ring un-usable:

I filed it smooth, and harmony was restored.

The cassette is no more than four rides old so I think it should be fine mate.
