I've fitted a new chainset to my eldest lads bike and for some reason one crank arm is much closer to the chainstays than the other .....

The chainset is a sr Suntour model the same as came on my 529. Both the 529 and this 605 have 73mm bb shells so I'm not sure what the issue is ? There is one spacer on the drive side bb cup and that's it.

Any ideas ?

is the gap between wheel and chainstay the same both sides?

In those photos it looks like the wheel is nearer the NDS chainstay. I was simply wondering if the chainstays were actually symmetrical

^^ Could be that the frame is assymetric i.e. the stay are different shape on either side, plus as the chainset is new its unlikely that one of the crank arms isn't bent.

Also the chainset I took off had equal spacing either side.

The BB shell looks on the piss to me. ie drive side pointing slightly backwards which would bring the crank closer to the chainstay on that side.

Try measuring the distance between the crank and the downtube when rotated forwards.

Non boost chainset on a boost bike? BB is identical in boost.

Fit the spacers in the right places.
It really is as simple as that.

Went last week! 😆
A close up would help! There may also be other spacers on the axle, or maybe the cranks aren't fully home?

So I've just measured the cranks against the down tube and the gap is the same. Around 8mm to 10mm difference which is quite a lot.

Close ups .....

I've never fitted that chainset but that looks wrong. Is the crank not supposed to go on further?

No I don't think so. There are two parts to that bit you can see.

The inner part preloads the bearing and then the other part goes over and locks it in place. Then you slip the crank arm on and tighten with a single Allen key.

drive side closer or non-drive side? (to the down tube)

Is it square taper? If so need a longer axle length

What are the cranks?

EDIT - sorry, now seen in the op.

As an aside, didn't know Cambodia had a bike building industry!

flip the crank over so the drive side is on the disc side and see if it's still the same? If it is then it's the frame.

It's not square taper.

It's a two piece chainset like modern Shimano stuff.

Will swap the chainset around tomorrow to see if the clearances change sides.

Looks like that to me too.

The wheel isn't centered either.
Ropey frame?

Nah the frame is fine.

I've tried another wheel in it and that sits level.

The tyre on the rear wheel in the photos needs seating on the wheel properly.

The chainset and bottom bracket that came off this bike is now fitted to another bike and is perfectly spaced.
