So....
is there a recomended size for bike type etc.

back riding a hardtail and testing the 650b hype. So may as well get on the narrow wide bandwaggon also and fulfil all the 2014 clichés.

I ride xc/trail centres etc and used to full sus with a double set up and 36tooth. didn't use granny very much so was thinking 34 on the new bike or being 27.5 do you need to go smaller again 32 maybe?

any help cheers
Mike

No.

I couldn't tell any real difference pedalling 650 over 26. Fit the chainring that works for you. It comes down to your cadence, do you spin out, which gears do you use. Start with one and swap up or down if you need to.

It's just over 1.5 teeth smaller chainring for the same effective gearing on a 27.5 as on a 26. Your legs, location and riding determine what you need.

FWIW I'm running a 34 with an 11-36 on my race bike. If I was going to just be doing trail centres I might be tempted to stick a 32 on it.

yeah for those climbs at the end of the day, legs are gone etc. umm just seem too small. would you spin out with that on the trail you think? Then again I won't racing, just want to stay fast.

I don't think you'd spin out a 32:11 on the trails. Almost definitely would on the road though. You do have the option of using one of the new 40/42t cassette extender things and keeping the 34 up front.

FIFY

everyone is different, I find 32/11 too low a lot, mostly when you really want 1 peddle stroke to count a bit.

32:11 on a 27.5 is basically the same as 34:11 on a 26. It's even higher geared when your 27.5 is wearing big tyres all year round but your 26 has a mud tyre on the back in the winter.

How often do you spin out your current 36:11 top gear?

A few times, I was running 24/39 until last week and until my Hope 40t arrives I'm running 34 which I find a bit low for my legs. It's a very personal thing, I don't spin as fast as some other people so my top cadence seems to be lower. It's actually something I've spent a bit of time looking at hence my comment that it's a very personal thing.

I wasn't asking you about spinning out, I was asking the OP, as it's a personal thing! We've already established that you have a physiological condition which stops your legs moving quickly... 😛

I reckon if you are asking for advice on which front cog for 1x10 you aren't fit enough to enjoy it.

And if you are only riding trail centres what is the point of losing the 'escape' gear?

Thanks for the advice, don't think it means your not fit enought b r, just mean you don't want to **** money away on something that may not be right for you! If you need the 'escapse' gear then whos not fit now! But think I'll go 34 as I like to push rather than spin. So just need that clutch mech in stock crc then it on!

Cheers all

I run out of spin on 32/11 but not so dramatically that it feels like a problem, I just switch to pump/carry speed mode. My DH bike has a 36 so I figured my hardtail could live with a 32.

I have just gone from 32 to 34 up front on the rigid bike. BUT have gone up to 34t at rear so same bottom end and a smidge higher at the top.

Partly dictated by what I could get from that was in stock on that day.

I have been wondering about putting a granny back on but without the mech cable and shifter. I virtually never want a lower gear but it would then always be hidden there if I totally conked out on a big ride.

Maybe that's worth considering if sizing up on the outer ring?

Cannot be much of a weight penalty and with no guide issues on thick thin setup it seems like a cunning and small compromise.
