i have the option of running my single chainring in the middle ring position or the outer (big ring position). i can achieve a clean chainline by using the spacers that came with the rear sprocket.

is there any particular reason why it should be inboard or outboard?

On some frames clearance is reasonably tight around the seat stay if you were to be running an 18t sprocket right at the edge of the freehub (which you'd possibly need to do to get a good chainline with the chainring in the outer position).

If it works in either position and clears the frame etc, I can't see any reason why you shouldn't run it in the outer position.
