I have tried the search before anyone points it out but results seem to be a little well you know .rap .
What am I doing wrong ? please help as I am making a bit of a mess of my new frame.
new rings (steel deore), cassette, chain, 113mm bottom bracket octalink xt crank arms. Sram rear mech.
It suffered a bit when I swapped bits over from my orange 5 so I renewed all the drive chain as I thought it may be a bit worn.It helped loads but it still happens.
It seems to happen when I change gear from small to middle ring.
What else do I need to do ???
Love the bike, mayde its just a little to good for me as I seem to be doing things I really should not at my age.
Simon

Well as a starting point you might want to read this thread...

http://www.singletrackworld.com/forum/topic/arrrrgh-inbred-and-chain-suck

Its more Inbred based but same principles apply.

new middle ring and granny? often it the ring holding the chain that causes the problem.

So no burrs, on the new rings either?

ha, sticky lube..apparently my finishline green is sticky as hell and causes my chainsuck (personally i think thats horseshit) i really dont know what causes mine as my drivechain is all new but as i mentioned if you have had it then recheck your chain for twisted links as it'll cause it for sure.

thanks so far. I will try another chain as this one has had a few sucks and maybe damaged. I will have to build the 5 up again to use all the bits up the soul refuses, hope it does not get too expensive!!!!!!

Chain suck article

I find my front cogs run close to the chain stays anyway, so I guess this aggrevates the situation. See how you get on with the above article - debunks some myths....

This is not going to help. I can only say that there should be a cure, as I don't get it on mine.

What cranks are they? If they can take a 118mm bottom bracket it would be worth trying one to get a bit more chain ring clearance.

Also had chain suck on my soul - only thing I didn't change was the lube - purple extreme - but I've since moved on to Fenwicks in the last month so when I ride the Soul again I'm trying that as it's been fine on my full susser.

Wonder if a re-design has cured it? Mine doesn't have the little dimple in the chainstay, as per their website:

118 BB. Try reading the thread linked above. I posted specifically about my Octalink equipped Soul. With a picture.

my ti 456 started doing it for the first time this w/end - been riding it nearly a year without any problems. I presume the drivetrain is starting to wear out, haven't checked anything yet though.

Recently just started happening with me, I put it down to 'sticky' mud am currently having. Seems to start into the ride a bit. I wrapped the frame with self adhereing tape ( black rubber stuff that sticks to itself ) to protect the frame.
After reading the post earlier, i've popped out and checked things. the tape looks a little frayed behind the middle ring so I put a line of zip ties along the chainstay by where the middle ring picks it up.
Does there need to be much clearance between chainstay and rings?

Has anyone had any luck with maybe fitting a Stainless Steel middle ring like one of those on-one numbers. Reading the link above it mentioned better quality rings, as I like steel for the life span. Will the on-one offer a bit more precision or not.
Anyone ??

There's been a lot of talk of chainsuck on On-Ones and I've often wondered about Cotics as they seem to have a similar wide, bridgeless stay design with outer gussets. If you can run a 113mm BB they're probably not quite as wide of the On-Ones (I've got an 853 Inbred) but going for a 118mm (as mentioned above) should help. AFAIK most Octalink cranksets (I've an XT) were designed to work with 113 or 118mm axles (although 113 was prefered), the exceptions were certain LXs I believe. A 118mm axle should give a 50mm chainline which is what (I think) the current HT11 crop of cranksets have.

I wouldn't poo poo the lube option either, it helped for me; even if the lube's tackiness isn't enough to hold the chain it will attract a lot of dirt which won't help.

It might also be worth checking your front mech. set up. My chainsuck occured mainly whilst shifting down from the middle to granny and overshifting the granny ring (rather than the other way as you describe)so a well adjusted mech might help; their are overshift prevention devices too like the Deda Dog Fang and N-Gear Jump Stop.

On the steel ring front I think it's a great idea and I don't think that there's any need to go for anything other than good old Deore steel rings (granny and middle), I replace my XT's middle and granny rings with these and it's made a huge difference.

Blastit, the On-one chainrings aren't ramped so might struggle to shift across from granny to middle ring as there won't be any pins to pick the chain up, I have thought of trying it though but just not got around to it.
My steel 456 used to do it (xt HT11 chainset), I cured it by putting all of the BB spacers on teh drive side, worth a try.

Chainsuck is caused by derailleurs. The cure is single speed ๐Ÿ˜€

(or Alfine, or Rohloff)

Dont know about curing your chain-suck, but a better way of searching is to add your search criteria to the end of this address...

I have now popped a 118mm bottom bracket on to see what happens, when talking to the boys at Cotic they said a 47mm chain line was what was needed.Which I had running a 113mm BB.
So if I run a 118mm BB I will have a 49.5mm, am I right ???
It gives a nice bit of clearence between the rings and chainstay ,not as much as my P7 running a 113mm BB but a lot more (2.5mm) than before.
Thank you very much for your help.
Simon

The chainline you need is specified in the shimano tech docs. I thought most needed 50mm, but it's a case of having mechs and cranks that are designed for the same chain line from what I understand.

I've run 118 on a Soul for years with no recurrence of chainsuck. An added bonus is that you can now trim the front mech outboard a bit more which improves tyre clearance considerably. You can easily run 2.5 Diesels in there with 118.

Sounds good, always thought the front mech was a bit close to the tyre.
