My rear mech was trashed recently and I think my long chain was to blame as I had swapped over from another bike assuming they were roughly the same size...
I have now put a new chain on and used the method of round both big cogs plus 2 links but it is longer that the old chain and super slack when on litle front and 3 smallest at the back. Just wondering what to do - cut more off chain until the chain is tighter on these cogs? I have a med cage rear mech so maybe that is contributing to problem... ๐
I'll assume not a troll
a) big-big + 2 links is correct but make sure it is completely tight top and bottom - easy to get an extra link measurement
b) check against old chain
c) you should not be using small ring and 3 smallest cogs - bound to be slack and chain line is poor, causing exessive wear
d) if you are running triple front you should have a long cage mech to be able to take up the slack
Exactly what the captain says!
Thanks, I have read lots of conflicting info about long vs med and my impression is that I could get away with a med cage fro my setup I guess I just need to be very aware of the gear I am in and not caught in the moment.
If you've only got a medium cage mech you could remove one link from the chain, but be aware that you could blow the mech apart if you end up big/big
