Hey,

just got my boy this:

https://www.orbea.com/gb-en/bicycles/mx-20-team-disc

All good, but no chain guide? If he spins the pedals backwards in 1st gear the chain comes off and he loses his s*!t. He's 5!

Just wondering where I could get one similar to one of these on this bike:

https://www.specialized.com/gb/gb/kids/bikes/mountain/boys6-speedhotrock20/118295

Doesn't have the standard 3 bolt fitting so I gather it needs to be a special one for kids bikes? Some links to some options would be brilliant as it's hard to find stuff for kids on bike shops.

Thanks

Rob

Those hot rock ones clamp behind the bottom bracket. They're also solid steel and a bit rubbish. There are plenty on the market the same principle but better.

This style:

I'd be tempted to let the chain and drive train wear in a bit then fiddle.is the b-tension correct and did they line up the mech hanger ???

If I understand its going into the wheel when back pedalling or is it coming off the bottom of the chainring

Are keeping the whole groupset or sticking with the Altus etc.?)

Did you clean the packing gunk off the chain ???

We never needed a chain retention device.... on the 20er the cranks had a double bashring... on the 24 we had clutch mech and NW... (might be better looking for a 5 bolt NW if possible)

I just took a chain retainer off his 24 enduro bike and replaced with clutch mech and NW.. initial tests seem to indicate I won't need to put it back..

Hi Steve,

thanks for the feedback.

Yeah, it comes off the bottom as I think the chainring is a bit far away from the first gear. I do need to check the b-tension. We got it yesterday and took it straight out so I haven't fettled it myself yet.

Be nice if I could just put a blackspire on there for piece of mind to help stop it happening as they're pretty cheap and look pretty good too.

Not looking to change any of the groupset yet. Will probably put some SRAM gear on when the one on the bike wears out.

Should the small Blackspire chain guide fit on there? Sometimes hard to find the info. I have a non bolt version on one of my other bikes, but that has the larger aperture to fit the larger crank.

Thanks for your help with this ๐Ÿ™‚

Rob

If its the BB fitting one then the square taper changes length by 2mm in the wrong direction for the chainline.

The Orbeas look pretty well sorted out... we "park" next to one when we ride to school ... so I'm surprised if its not just gunk on the chain or just the mech alignment ... and it won't sort out..

If its coming off at the hanger side of the cassette, then a chainring chain device wont help.
You need to chack your stops and get the rear mech tuned.
Trouble with kids bikes is they take a bashing and the hanger is probably already bent... possibly even right out of the box.

I'll make a brew and fettle it ๐Ÿ™‚ Might just be a minor adjustment to stop it popping off.

It falls off on the inside so a guide should catch it if the fettle doesn't work ๐Ÿ™‚

Thanks ๐Ÿ™‚

Have you de-greased it ???
or as said above it's just got a whack in transit or even the bolts just aren't done up on the hangar....???
