...that doesn't treat my chain like a surgical instrument? Folk advising all sorts of different lubes, degreasing when new FFS?

I use Finish Line Wet lube, cos that's what I have in the cupboard, I rarely clean chains, just lube them when they sound rough. This "WORKS" for me.

Tests have shown a full degreased chain is as efficient as a lubed on!

Please link to tests.

I use gear oil, because that what's the guys that make the chains say to use, it's made by a known and represented name in lubrication, and it's oodles and oodles cheaper than the boutique snake-oil on the market.

Same here, regular squirt with wet lube, VERY occasionally remove and clean the chain in a bath of solvent. Mind you it's on a Rohloff so not so critical.

Chainsaw chain oil is about the best you can get IME.

Yep. Understood.
I do clean mine when I clean the bike but I just lube it with whatever I have lying around. Old fork oil, engine oil, free samples etc. It's not what you clean it with which matters, it's THAT you clean it that counts. I just give it a scrub with soapy water then lube. Any lube that's too sticky is a git to get off.

I lube mine when I bother to wash it and that's it.

I usually just spray with GT40 then run through a towel before dripping a bit of Dry lube on it.
however occasionally i'll take it off, drop it into a 500ml coke bottle with a splash of white spirit and give it a good shake, seems to clean it OK...

Purple extreme. Less chance of chain suck (carbon frame)) than with crapped up chain.

I'm not that fussed really.
Finish Line Wet for most riding (it's Scotland). I also have some Finish Line Dry for "best" and a lovely ceramic stuff which I use on the road bike. I like the latter as it seems to stick to the chain really well without attracting lots of road dirt.

I will, very occasionally, do a full chain clean using one of the those whirly machines, but usually I can't be arsed.

TBH, I seem to be a lot less precious about my bikes than I was. Once upon a time they would get a good hose down/wash/re-lube after almost every ride. Now I have to be in the mood and they have to be pretty filthy before I'll do it.
