Are there any options apart from Mavic Open Pros? I've read the quality of the coating on these isn't what it used to be.

I though Rigida and/or DT Swiss did them but i can't find anything.

Cheers.

Bontrager?

These are on ebay at the moment

24h drillings though which could give hub availability problems?

Thanks, I've just seen those, i think they'll be too wide for road tyres though. I've emailed the seller to check.

the Mavics do seem to be a problem. A friend had local wheel guru Harry Rowland try to build some wheels up with them and the ceramic coating started to come off during tensioning.

The ceramic Open Pros on my CX have been fine so far after 4 years, 3 rounds of the Three Peaks and numerous other off-road outings.

It's just beginning to wear now on part of the rim that's dented after an overly clumsy wheel/rock interface but doesn't affect the braking too much. TBH I reckon that 4 years out of them is pretty good going considering the use they've had - a regular set of Open Pros would probably have worn out completely by now.

They're expensive rims though, about £80 each IIRC.

Yep, i've got some ceramic open pros on my winter bike that are almost 10 years old (!). The coating is increasingly patchy but there's loads of life left in them still.

I want some for my summer bike too. Thing is, as plop_pants says there's lots of reports of newly-purchased ones wearing out much faster.

Another nice thing about them is they don't generate that skanky black braking dust.
