I'm after a new laptop for photo editing, and want some thing with a either 1080 or 1200 vertical pixels (My current 5 year old laptop has 900 pixels and limits the photo size too much when the lightroom menus are visible)
Not too worried about processor spec, want at least 4Gb ram, off-chipset graphics card, eSATA port, and option to fit a second HD (SSD for quick access files and OS)
I've always built my own home PCs, so dont have much experience in this area. What manufacturers should I be looking at?

could you just get a tasty dell 24" tft panel to plug in to your current laptop for the photo work or does it *need* to be a laptop?

My Dell Precision M4300 has served me very well for photo editing.
Ditto the external monitor option FTW.
I need a new laptop anyway so thought I might as well get a good screen, current one only has analogue output port, not HDMI. Will look at the Dells though as they do UWXGA options
I'd still seriously consider a cheaper laptop and an external monitor if you're doing a lot of photo work... The image quality tends to be better on external ones than ones on laptops- generally brighter, more consistent across the screen and with much more control over stuff like contrast, gamma etc.... . You can plug analogue VGA into the above one.
