Would he have won the jersey had he not had his points docked for that one stage or would Thor have still won overall? Can't find the final points and the scoring for that stage...

From memory...
He lost 15points and finished 10 points behind Hushovd (or something like that)

So a simplistic answer would be that he would have won green. However Hushovd would have ridden differently in subsequent stages and I believe he would still have won the green jersey in the end.

Hushovd really, really, really wanted to win the green jersey.
Cavendish really, really, really wanted to arrive in Paris with a good chance of the stage win.

Yeah, there is that to consider too, I was just wondering what the points difference was. Of course, if Cav hadn't have lost the points in that stage he may have ridden differently too, so a difficult call.

Yes, he would have in theory but in reality, Thor would probably have gone for more intermediate sprints which Cav didn't seem to be contesting.

take into account that Cav has the best train, as good as Fassa Bortolo's, Hushovd is a freelancer without any support from his team.

Garmin spoilt Thor's finish in the final stage, laymen!

points wise yes but i think thor is a better all round/clever rider and would still have snapped up the needed points .

tho its all a learning experience for cav and he should only get better ๐Ÿ˜‰ six stages cant be that bad lol i wonder if thor would have traded the green jersey for six stages at the start ๐Ÿ˜‰

Hushovd according to Cavendish!

But the Manxman conceded on Friday that if Hushovd holds on to the green jersey in Paris on Sunday, he will deserve it.

"After Thor's ride two days ago no one deserves the green jersey more than him," Cavendish said after beating Englishman Barry Hoban's previous record of eight stage wins on the race.

I think after the DQ Hushovd laid down a marker in his performances . No way Cav could have kept up

I'm pretty sure he would have won. He'd already started contesting intermediates and had got all excited about it.
Would have certainly made it a LOT more interesting.
Who else thought that Dutch commissaire was a complete t****r!

Thor would still have won it IMO. Still, learning curve for Cavendish. He'll think twice before blocking his opponent next time.

I didn't actually see the block - was it a fair decision by the organisers?

Still - nothing could beat Saturday's stage - I have watched the final 10k about 4 times now. Amazing from Wiggins ๐Ÿ™‚

Yes and no. I'm sure Hushovd would have tried to get more points, but I really can't see where he'd have managed it. AFAIK all the other sprint points were mopped up by breaks, and much as Hushovd might have tried to get in them, I doubt he'd have succeeded had Cav still been in with a shout of the Green (Cav's team would doubtless have chased any break with Hushovd in, which would have resulted in the other members of the break telling him to get lost). The most obvious thing then is that Hushovd would have tried to finish higher up in the final sprint - I suspect though that he was trying as hard as possible.

Of course whilst Cav lost 15 points to Hushovd, the penalty a lot of us consider would have been just for that incident would have been to reverse the places (since it wasn't deliberate or dangerous, but he did impede). That would have resulted in him losing 4 points, and eventually winning the Green Jersey by a single point!

Who else thought that Dutch commissaire was a complete t****r!
Even had he reversed his decision that would still have been the case.

Not that I think Hushovd didn't deserve to win the Green Jersey - IMHO it should be for more than just winning flat stages.

2 or 3 days before in my eyes thor tried to pull the same move on cav - cav just moved round and punched past him rather than sat in and complain...

Cav said all along that he would go for as many stage wins as possible, and if that gave him the green as well then all the better. So, setting aside the incident, he got what he predicted. Plus the incident happened partly because of trying to get two conflicting things at once - holding up the pack to get the yellow for Hincapie but score print points at the same time.

Thor showed that his positional sense in a sprint is relatively poor. He got caught out in the final stage too.

He wasn't really trying that hard to win the final stage - more just to finish high enough up to ensure green.

I'm still surprised noone tried to gently ease Thor (or Cav for that matter) off his bike in the last few hundred metres. Of course I forget that all cyclists who actually make it to Paris are perfect gentlemen. Not like F1 is it?
Mind you wasn't Schumacher fairly reasonable on a bike.

I like it when they *show* they weren't trying - like Contador at the top of Ventoux - wiping sweat from his face metres before the finish line, as if to say 'I could have beaten you, I just wasn't trying to'.

Yeah, I really think not - especially as you watch it on replay - he gets in a reasonable position but takes no real risks and makes no real effort to move up - don't get me wrong, no doubt he's have gone for it if it had all been clear but realistically, Cav was always going to be very hard to beat so why take any real risk when you probably won't win anyway - risk/reward ratio and all.

His positional sense is perfectly good - he's won lots of sprints despite never having a real dedicated train.

Personally I saw Thor going hard for it this year ( to win the jersey), as he's not stupid, and knows that for the next few years at least, Cav's got it pretty much sown up.
