I am in the process of stripping down my road bike to build up a new CX bike.

I currently have a set of Mavic Aksium road wheels with a 105 cassette (10 speed) and when I transferred the cassette across to my new wheelset (Crank Brothers 29er) the cassette lock ring wouldn't pick up on the thread.

I took the cassette off and took the little spacer off the back of the cassette and re-fitted the cassette but this time the cassette went on too far and the lock ring tightened up against the freehub rather than the cassette.

In the end I put it back together with the spacer and found an old 11t lock ring that was able to pick up the thread and tighten up rather than use the original 12t.

Tonight I have bought an aftermarket lock ring that looks as if it has a longer threaded bit and is for a 12T which should hopefully work but I am wondering if this is a common issue or a road bike / mountain bike 10 speed compatibility issue or just Shimano Road and Crank Brothers wheel issue.

Has anyone else had this issue??
