Just had a quote of ~£20.... sounds reasonable to me. Going to drop the frame off tomorrow for the guy to have a better look at.
also got a quote for £30 for a chemical dip'n'strip. any pro's or con's of dipping vs bead-blasting?
Picked up the frame from the bead-blasters this morning.... now just need to mask it up and drop it off for the 'free' powder-coat that a friend owes me!
The Madison Trail saddles arrived today as well. Look rather comfortable, compared to the standard one!!
I'm now just trying to decide if I stay with the standard handlebars, stem, and seat post. Or do I upgrade them?
Same with the crank-set... the current one seems 'ok' and is only 140mm.
The pedals need replacing though, the bearings are shot. Any recommendations? I'm thinking resin based, as he's only 5-6, so bear-trap style ones are going to just shred his shins everytime he comes off it!!!
Managed to get a few jobs done this weekend on the project-bike.
- cut the steerer tube down to the same length as the old forks (185mm) using a pipe-cutter! Nice and clean/smooth cut.
- rubbed down and sprayed matt-black: seat-post, handle-bars, stem, cranks
- bought some Wellgo/Raleigh pedals: https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B004KTRKM8/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o01_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
- bought a new 6/7-speed chain
- soaked the rear mech in degreaser, hopefully it will be good enough to go back on
Just had confirmation that the frame has been powder-coated, and is ready for collection!
I'll pick it up tomorrow lunchtime, and then the re-build can start on Wednesay morning! Watch this space!
Yay, looking forward to seeing it, love a good kids build!
Looks good, if you don't have bars sorted yet I have a 25.4mm carbon flat bar doing nothing.
I left the shells from the old bottom-bracket in place to keep the thread clear of paint... I just hope it doesn't chip when I remove them! I'll score around them first....
Pictures aren't showing for me!
Also @happybiker I could be Interested in the carbon bar if Andy isn't!
Try the pics again....

Can see them now, very good Colour choice. Reminds me of a dialled alpine I used to have
The colour was a case of "I don't mind what colour it is, just use whatever is going through the spary-booth at the time!" I'm quite pleased with it. It's not perfect, as I think they got the apprentice to do it, but for a 'favour' it's spot-on!
Love that! Waiting on a decent pile of stuff from Bike Discount for my youngest's Rockrider. It's already got mid '90s V brake levers and micro shift rapid fire which worked great for the eldest but he's a lot less slight than the youngest. Have some Avid V brakes sitting, and I'll be changing bars, stem, pedals, and maybe the saddle when it all turns up.
Love the colour!
Is the BB still installed or something, not sure from the pic?
BB is the old shell, to keep the threads clean during painting.... both came out ok, and the faces cleaned up nicely.
Partially reassembled..... new saddle (Madison Trail) and peddles (Wellgo) are on his current bike, and will be moved over when he's ready for this one. Just need new brake and gear cables. Might go for matching orange jagwires outers, or keep the black theme....
Looks nice. Personally I'd go for black outers as they'll contrast nicely with the paint.
That looks awesome, definitely black cables. Maybe orange grips then everything else black.
Gone for black hoses. Just need some new v-brake noodles/pipes, and then I'm good to go. Hopefully get it finished this week.
I've started something that I can't stop though..... I've picked up two more Carrera Blasts.... a 20" (£25) and a 24" (free!)..... The plan is to give them a quick service and tart up, and flog to pay for the rebuild of the orange one!!!
I've also swapped the headset spacers for plain black ones from one of the other Blasts!!! I've also pinched the rear-mech protector, as this one didn't have one. It's a bit hefty, but will protect the new mech (when it arrives!)
Looking great!
