Canyon's AeroCockpit allows you to alter the width and height of the bars on some of their road bikes. On the one hand this is handy for setting up the bike as it's just a few bolts and means you don't have to buy new bars. But then for the rest of the life bike you have a load of bolts to work loose and a telescopic bar that could start creaking, adds extra weight etc. Plus I'm not keen on the stem being held on with only one (really tight) bolt.

Is this a great idea that makes like easier or just a complicated way of trying to get round internal brake hoses?

This one.

The whole point of a road bike is just how simple, yet amazing it is. If you're going all complicated and intricate you might as well get a mountain bike, and then you can use flats and not feel guilty about it.

Stupid AF in my opinion. Also the first generation were a bit snappy, although they seem to have sorted that now.

I can just imagine the conversation at Canyon......

To make more profit, we need to make the bikes cheaper to ship. Why don't we use smaller boxes?
We need wide boxes to accommodate the handlebars.
Why don't we chop the bars into 3 sections & supply bolts so the owner can put them back together.
They'll never accept bars chopped into three, just so we can use a smaller box.
Aaaaaah yes, but we can stick a few hole positions in the design & now it's an "adjustable handlebar".
They'll never fall for that.
How about if we call it Aero......yeah, that should work. Only sell it on the top-end bikes for a season & then use the 'trickle down' excuse to make it available across the board.

Maybe a touch cynical 🙂

This is what I thought. I'm also wondering where the extra brake hose goes. Having it all flapping around inside the tubes would be annoying

No thanks. It'll creak eventually. It's all down to how hard adjusting integrated cockpits has become. Personally, I am happy with the <1 Watt hit for visible cables. Seriously, it is unmeasurable in normal settings.

Power is 0.5*Rho*Cd*Area*V^3

Cables are basically straws with a Cd of ~1.1, Air density (Rho) is 1.2 kg/m^3, and assume 20 mph speed (V = 8.9 m/sec)

Power (watts) = 0.5*1.2*1.1*area*705 = 465 x Area in m^2

Assuming cables are  0.5 cm wide housing, so Area =  0.005*Length in metres and hence:

Power (watts) = 2.3/metre

If you have front cables (not hidden by other parts of the frame), of, say 0.5 metres, you are losing 1.2 Watts. On my TT bikes, I have placed any exposed cables in line with frame tubes - I also have aero brakes…ok ignore the back end
