[Closed] Cane creek DB inline air vs DB coil

I've ended up with one each of these shocks. Both are basically new and both will fit my new frame. Has anyone used both and is able to give a comparison between them. I know the inline air is lighter but the have been some reliability questions. Frame is a Rocket 650b.

I'll take a little added weight and relative peace of mind when it comes to reliability.

Depending on the flavour of DB Inline Air, you really need to budget £200 for the TFTuned rebuild, it's on my list for mine. Mine was killed last year at Bedgebury and now makes an awful lot of noise with no damping whatsoever, it's languishing in a drawer while I run with a Rockshox Monarch instead.

How long a warranty do you have on the Inline? It's a gamble I'd be very reluctant to take again myself.

The coil is still the best shock I've ever ridden. I'd keep that and perhaps pick up an alternative air shock later.

Bought the inline at most two months ago so about 10 months left (presuming only a one year warranty). I've not idea how to tell what flavour it is. No warranty on the coil as it came with a second hand frame (though sold as having done 150km which frame and shock condition confirms). I think I'd need a light spring for the coil but that's no too big a deal. It also the non climb switch version, again not sure that matters much.

It depends on if the frame is designed around a coil shock. My previous bike was progressive / regressive so wasnt suitable unfortunately.

I had a DBInLine on my Spitfire. After the third time it broke, I got a DB coil with Ti spring. The InLine them went back to Cane Creek for a £75 warranty upgrade to DB Air CS and now alternate between the two as and when I fancy a change.

Also means I have a spare if one goes for a service.

Edit - I never use the CS on the DB Air.

Are you the kind of person that would bother swapping the shock over for holidays and stuff? Could you afford to keep both?

The Inline is brilliant when it works.

I could afford to keep both but don't think I use the bike enough to justify both (and I also have a fox shock floating around that fits and works). I doubt I would swap them for a holiday mainly because after I've sorted everything else out I wouldn't have time :D. Cotic do sell the Rocket from new with a coil shock option (though the IL CS version not the piggyback one).

Keep the coil and get rid of the air would be my vote

I've had a CCDB coil for just over 2 years now and it's been excellent (on my main bike which gets ridden all the time)

From what I've heard the air shocks are less reliable. Mate who had one on his Rune had his fail 3 times in two years. He'd had enough by this time and bought a CCDB coil to replace it, which has run without issue ever since

get a lighter spring for the coil if you need it.

Well after last night's ride the inline appears to have deselected itself .

I would but it's nowhere near as nice as the CC.

Can anyone confirm what the common inline failure is. Mine feels crap as you sit onto the bike (similar feeling the a collapsing reverb). Then feels like it's doing nothing at low speed (loads of buzz from the back that's a not normally there) But once it goes past 1/3rd travel it's feels like it's working fine. When off the bike there is a noticeable clunk then step as you push down on the frame.

Last time mine went it totally lost compression damping.

Piss poor engineering, I'd say.

Chakaping, high and low speed?

Pjm1974, I'm getting that impression.

Watching with interest as my new bike has the unmodded shock.
What does the rebuild consist of, is it just new internals?

Can't remember, but you would know if yours was doing same.

I believe that the weak point is the seal separating the damping circuits. From what I recall, precision engineering was required to ensure that the damping circuits didn't leak, which was accounted for in the design, but the actual production processes let it down.

I read something about newly machined and anodized shock components being thrown into a large container which caused the issue, but the press releases shared with Pinkbike have suggested it the seal itself was to blame.

Either way, you're looking at around £200 to bring your Mk1 Inline up to snuff, which is a kick in the teeth when you could've simply bought a Fox or Rockshox unit in the first instance. It's certainly prejudiced me against investing money in Cane Creek kit in the future.

[edit]

It's 180 to upgrade your shock from TF Tuned, in you include postage, it's around £200.

If you mean it sits into the first bit of travel very easily then mine used to do that. Think it's normal - the air chambers equalizing.

It didn't used to do it though. Just started mid ride last night. There is a very noticeable step in the movement.

Thanks PJM so I guess I'll just ride and see then.
Do you know if the upgraded spec is holding up better?
If it fails and gets done under warranty fair enough, can't see me paying for it as an upgrade though.
