Can you run a 2.5" ...
 

[Closed] Can you run a 2.5" stroke spring on a 2.75" stroke rear shock?

I have a 350lbs x 2.75" stroke DHX5 on an 08 SX Trail.
I'm looking for a 450lbs x 2.75" titanium spring.
I have been offered a 450lbs x 2.5" Ti spring by someone who tells me [i]'because the titanium coils are spaced so wide it will run ok with a rear shock with a stroke of 2.5 - 3.0'.[/i]
I can see how this would make sense, as it seems less likely to get coil bound but can anyone tell me if this is true or is there something else I should also be considering?

I'd agree, it should be fine as long as you aren't planning on running masses of pre-load.
although, be aware that ti springs fatigue quicker than steel and because you are squishing it slightly further than intended it will accelerate the fatigue (shorten it's life)

see if you and some mates can put enough weight on the bike to fully compress the spring just to check that it doesn't get coilbound.

(You can actually do the maths - measure the diameter of the spring wire, count how many turns there are in the spring, multiply the two numbers together giving the approx length of the spring full compressed (give or take since the coils are actually at an angle to the axis of the spring) and check that there's at least 65-70mm difference (just to be confident that you're not going to bottom it out) between that measurement and the unloaded spring length

measure the gaps between the coils? see what you get.

boobs; i'm sure the gap will be wider, as they are on ti springs compared to normal steel. What will measuring tell me? Is there a numerical rule for the gap relating to the stroke?

Thanks everyone, just spoke to TF Tuned and they agreed that in this case (my weight, bike type, make and spec of spring), it would be fine.
