I've got some very light weight Formula floating rotors, could they be broken by braking?
I did a particularly muddy race where I totally destroyed my brake pads, and ended up using the backing pad/piston to stop, which wore the rivets on my Hope floating rotors such that they developed a lot of fore/aft play.
So yes.
You can get lighter 1-piece steel rotors these days too, floating isn't worth it.
Rotors wear out and then crumple or the metal breaks in places. I have worn out a couple of sets in the last few years.i guess thin ones wear faster.

think he did a jump with the back brake hard on and the rotor just folded.

That was my concern, for my Alps trip, which, this time, involves uphill pedalling...
