Ok I remember back in the day that you could run 8 on 7,9 on 8 etc but yes going the other way = less space on the cassette gears I guess.

12 will run 11, 11 on 10. Out diameter shrinks. Inner diameter is the same. 10 wont run nicely if at all on 11 because its too wide outer width
