Spaceweather.com says there's a massive solar storm in progress. Can someone please go outside and look at the sky? Look North and tell me what you see. (assuming there's no cloud...)

Just outside Edinburgh. Sky is mostly cloudy but where I can see stars, there is no sign of an aurora.

Anybody further North. I'm in Sheffield myself so got that covered... If it wasn't for the light pollution and patchy cloud we might've been able to see it as far South as Sheffield. In 1991 I saw a very bright display from Bridlington.

I lived in Turriff (Aberdeenshire) 11 years ago at the last solar maximum. It takes quite a clear night, no moon and no light pollution to be able to see moderate aurorae. North of Turriff there's almost no street lighting all the way to the North Pole! So seeing the displays was probably a bit easier.

This is the current theoretical aurora 'footprint':

The colours are artificial. As the display occurs at great altitudes, distant watchers will see displays as far away as 50 to 80 miles, but obviously very faintly.

Fort William. Just looked out the front door and there is indeed a faint glow through a break in the clouds but theres too many streetlights around to say its anything other than normal…..it could also be the copious amounts of red wine I've had tonight. 🙂

I spent a whole year trying to see the aurora, saw about 6 displays. It was well worth it. To see these weird lights in the sky just blows your mind!

Any faint glows I get on the horizon will be burning cars, people or shops.

I got a few pics looking over Inverness with a bright arc spanning the sky. Some of the later pics have clouds coming into the shots.Nothing spectacular but i`ll try and post them up tomorrow.

When i worked in Aviemore i remember one week driving home at night.. you could see it from the car driving on the A9 with car lights in front of you.I think over one week it was visable for about 5 days solid.

Might go out late tomorrow night too if its clear as i`d like to get some more pattern to it.These pics are glowing arcs, nowt special but worth posting.

It may last until tonight but I doubt it, Minnesota in the USA are currently enjoying the show.

Any news on those pics martinxyz?
I've got an obsession about seeing the Aurora and have watched the Spaceweather site for a few years now. Another weird obsession is with this site: underground stuff

This guy on flickr is worth checking out, though the are taken in Alaska and the Yukon. Stunning photos, his wildlife ones are good too.
