can u have them running either indexed or just as a a friction shifter? if they can be used as the latter then they would work with 10 spd cassette?

Even if they have a friction mode, it's a pain running non-indexed with high speed (say 9 or 10) cassettes as you're constantly having to tweak it to get the position just right unlike old 6/7 speed bikes where there was plenty of margin.
