Can anyone recommend a campsite near Mabie - preferably one that allows fires ?

Highly recommend the one at Kippford, not sure about them allowing fires though. http://www.kippfordholidaypark.co.uk/output/home.asp

Should have said, Kippford is nearer Dalbeatie but makes a great base for visiting Mabie too, if you are heading there from the North you can do Ae on the way there.

Cheers cake eater - that is a nice site at Kippford. However, I'm popping over from North Cumbria with a gang of newbies and want to try and camp a bit closer to Mabie (if possible).

try marthrown of mabie http://www.marthrown.com/

they practically encourage arson, and have a top notch wood burning hot tub too, slap in the middle of the red route.

We stayed at Barnsoul Farm which is a nice little site about 7 miles out of Dumfries. The best thing is that they have little 2-person bothies called "wigwams" that you can hire out very cheaply if the weather's too rubbish to camp comfortably.

+1 for the wigwams. We stayed at Gorsebank http://www.wigwamholidays.com/Gorsebank_Wigwams and had a big fire outside, was ace, loads better than camping!
