Camping in France in September (first two weeks). The wife and I are heading down to the Dordogne from Calais and taking 4 days to get down there. Do I need to books campsites? Never been camping in France before and don't really speak French - would you advice booking or should I just let the chips fall where they may?? (bear in mind the missus will blame me if we end up sleeping in the car)....or should I just MFTU. ๐Ÿ™‚

No need to book campsites in France at that time of year. And if by some strange quirk of fate any are full then you won't have to drive too far to the next one. Just check in advance whether the campsites yoi intend to stay at are open beyond the end of August. You've much more freedom & flexibilty in your plans if you don't feel obliged to turn up at a prebooked campsite.

BTW, we've been camping in France several times as a family in August and never booked campsites. The only time we were unlucky was cycling around Northwestern Brittany one wet year when there was a big festival of the sea and we got turned away from about seven fully booked campsites. Eventually, one site took pity on us on account of our exhausted, cycling eleven year old and let us pitch our tent on their volleyball court.

no probs in september
best basic campsites are CAMPING MUNICIPALE ..cost peanuts and are often quiet although with basic amenities.5/7 euros vs 25/35 for a site with a pool and millions of people/noise etc,
