I ride in West Yorkshire, I am thinking about going SS.

I was thinking a 36/19 ratio would be good, what do you think?

Which is better 36/19 or 32/17.

I find it useful to take my chain off and throw it in some white spirit to clean it.I have heard good things about the KMC Z610 HX chain but does it have a power link type thing that I can reuse?

Would anybody recommend me another chain maybe?

Would an On One Groove Armada and Renthal Sr4 work with a 2/32 chain?

On One doofer any good?

Thanks all 🙂

The KMC's have a missing link thing i think but its a faff to get off and on like a power link. I just pop the pin out carefully.
Ratios are a bit trial and error. I went for 16:32 and never looked back but then I'm in the South east so terrain is different.
Any chain works in all honesty but the beefy BMX type chains offer a little more meat I guess and maybe dont have the chamfers etc that a standard mech chain has.
Doofers ok I had one for ages till I got sliding drop outs and never had an issue.
Best start growing the beard then...

1) probably, I get away with 2:1 (36:18 and 38:19) in Guisborough
2)36:19 is marginaly harder, will you notice the difference, probably not.
3)Does it have links in it, then yes,
4)I prefer 'chain left in bottom of spares box to mature for 3 years then libberaly soaked i oil to remove rust'.
5) maybe, I think you're overthinking the whole thing, I ran normal 8 speed chain on groove armada sprockets, I also ran 9speed.
6)why? My last SS was sold out of boredom after 2 maintennce free winters.

better? they are different ratios 32:17 slightly lower.

kmc chains are definately the best ime. they noramlly have some quicklink thing or another.

all components you mention will be fine. never used a doofer mind. always used gusset fixed tensioner

Most people seem to run a 32, why not a 36? since I though that there would be less stress on the chain...

I run 32:18 on mine (26"), grand for most of the shorter rides I do (Leeds/Dales/NYM area)
Main reason is that it's a magic ratio for my frame, so I don't need a tensioner.

711mm bars? You'll crash and die, you need between 712 and 713mm to be safe these days. The best stem for the job is the one that attaches your bars to the forks, everythig else will slow you down as you have to fit it then go for a ride, the whole point of SS (for me) was:

1) the complete lack of any faffing required to ride
2) everyone assumes you are more 'core than you actualy are, unless your down south in which case they just think your're northern.
3) as a result of point 1 there's no need to upgrade anything, ever, unless you get bored. The only SS upgrade possible is a months gym membership and some quality time on the leg press machine and/or smith machine and/or a barbel doing squats.
