I'm setting up my gears and brake cables and was wondering what is the best way to avoid damage to the frame and stop the cables grinding together when steering. Do must people route the cable around the other side of the headtube e.g the rear brake would feed round the right side of the headtube instead of right back in a straight line. Is there a basic rule on how to do it?

If anyone could help that would be great.

Either way - it depends on the shape of your bars. You should be aiming for one even curve with no abrupt bends. get the length and run right and they don't rub IME

Thats what I do, and then cross over to the left, under the top tube.

Depends where stops are but TJ's advice is generally good.

You can for instance make inners cross over on the top tube so that you can route the cable outer "around" the head tube.
