[Closed] Buying frame from US - how much tax / duty will I pay?

I know that this has been dealt with a few times but can't find anything recent.
After a long search, I've found a frame that I really want. The seller is a bike shop owner who is selling off stock personally... probably to free up some cash... but let's not get into that here 🙂

The value of the frame is £1500 delivered and what I have dug up is the following:
1. You pay import tax on frames @ 4.7% - say £70
2. There is a handling charge - I don't know, but I'll guess at £50
3. UK VAT is then added to the total @20%

This would give me a final price of circa £1950 (rounded up)

The seller has offered to send the frame as a 'gift' but I am reluctant to do this as the frame value is circa £3000+ if bought new in the UK. This is on the basis that if it were to go missing or get damaged, I would lose any chance of compensation.

Any input would be greatly received.

Adam

Apart from your pessimistic handling charge (£12-15) you're about there and seem to have answered your own question.

I paid the following last year on a frame and components, just to give you an idea....

Value of goods - $4465 (dollars) inc postage, so approx £2767 (pounds)

Import VAT - £599.03 (pounds)
Duties - £134.45 (pounds)
Brokerage charge - £18.34 (pounds)

Total - £751.82 (pounds)
