so today i decided to service my fox float fit forks (done this before, piece of cake)....did it today, no problems and then when i came to tighten the two nuts back up, bang, i overtightened the fit damper side nut, and its shearded off both the thread and the damper bit nob too 🙁
im so pissed off with myself, im usually so cautious with torque'ing etc that i just took it for granted and tightened away 🙁
well im almost certainly gonna have to pay something, but will it be the whole fit damper i need to replace or is the rebound rod and the thread at the end seperate to the rest of the cartridge?
such a sick feeling when i heard it crack and spin 🙁 moron, and so gutting, i want to cry 🙁
any help appreciated, ive email loco to see what he thinks too.....
Have a word with Simon at Loco Tuning, [edit: just read the last part of your post] give him a bell in the morning. I did something very similar two weeks ago and he sorted me out.
Don't worry about it dude, I was using a small torque wrench and destroyed both base bolts at around 3Nm when they're specified at 6.8Nm. Bonkers.
cheers rickon - did you snap off the thread/rebound rod in the process too?? if you dont mind me asking how much to repair?
any more thoughts folks?
Check out this thread - the same issue as you a chap had last week:

Don't worry, I've done the same before. The threaded bit unscrews from the damper unit and is available from mojo and the like for about £25. I did mine with an air ratchet. Turned the torque nob just past the #1 to the #9. Doh.
seriously? so that last bit of the rod detaches from the rod? i kinda thought it would be one sealed unit? 🙂 great news to hear it should be that cheap! so basically, you overtightened, and the rod and outer thread snapped off too?
I just whizzed the threaded bit that pops out through the lower straight off. Oops. Took the lowers off and realised it is a separate component. Phew. Yours may be different as they are FIT but I'd hope they are still using a similar removable component.
It's called a base valve and looks like this although this is exploded.

Far right on this explosion.

Oscillate's forks are a FIT cart equipped though, have the parts and will be sorting the forks tomorrow, removing parts of the cartridge really need the correct shaft clamps to reduce the chance of damaging the rods/tube which aren't alot thicker than a can generally alot of the parts are threadlocked as well meaning the shafts need to be clamped firmly so they don't spin when bits are screwed off.
