I've fancied building a wheel for a while and now have a spare rear Pro2 hub, so thinking of making a second set of xc wheels for my bike - main/current set is bulb/D521, so something light and tubeless would be a useful addition.

What is the Flow rim like to build with, as a beginner? Is it a bit ott for xc, given that I have D521s for harder riding? Maybe the Arch would be strong enough and a bit lighter?

Cheers!

1st wheel I ever built from scratch was a flow - went absolutely fine

only probs were psychological ( 😕 ) as they say you should use a bit lower than normal tensions and I'd never built to "normal"

wheel is fine though, 18 months on (mind, that's about 45 minutes riding for me)

Wheel building is easy. If you are near Glemsford Suffolk I will happily show you in my shop (I won't even charge given you are determined to give it a go).

The lack of ferrules makes them trickier but it's not a huge issue for most - just lube up your nipples first.

In a similar position with spare hub and would like to build a wheel but cant see the point. If I sell the hub and fund a fully built wheel it comes in cheaper. Am I missing something?

Some people enjoy learning new skills and working with their hands, I guess you don't.

No - would like to do it, just think that it should work out cheaper. I'd probably get spoke length wrong and it would end up costing more, that's all. Need a cheaper rim I suppose. Flows are expensive new, as are spokes it seems.

try sdeals.com for cheap spokes, and spoke length is not as critical as you'd think, plenty advice/calulators around too.
