I asked this same question a couple of weeks ago and was directed towards the gap route. Did it the Saturday before last (the hot weekend) and really enjoyed it. We did a slightly shorter route from talybont on usk rather than Brecon itself to cut out a few flat miles. The gap road is a great descent and worth the climb. Nice pubs in talybont too!

Also did the Gap Road from Talybont yesterday, if weather is good then an excellent ride.

IMHO the Gap as shown by most is not the best route in the Beacons. Put in the descent through the woods alongside Nant Menasgyn down to Llanfrynach and the ride gets a whole world bettererer.

When all is said and done though, get a map out and explore the stuff around Ystradfellte- there is so much wonderful riding there ๐Ÿ™‚

Or get ye over to Mynydd Llangors. Much happiness to be obtained in that district indeed!

"the descent through the woods alongside Nant Menasgyn down to Llanfrynach "

How do you access the start of this?

Crickhowell loop is pleasant and you can end it with a pint in the Bear.

I did this one a few weeks back and loved it (except my hub busting) off to do it today as well while I wait for my passport in Newport to be made

+1 for Llangors & Bwlch which i assume is the route Bushwacked linked to. We did this on Sunday and it was great fun with an awesome technical descent and a great long stretch of singletrack too.

The Blorenge route from Llanfoist is great too.

Brechfa is well worth a visit, rode it Saturday in the wet and loved it. I also rode the gap on Monday and thought that was well worth the effort, the 2-3 mile decent from the top down toward Brecon is great.

Nant Menasgyn is accessed by taking the stony and often overgrown trail that forks right just past the first farm track at the bottom of the Gap descent, at SO 038 237. If you don't want loose and stony and overgrown you can follow the 'normal' route on the lanes to Pen twyn Bridge and the steep little road climb that follows it.

Folow the lane past Llwyncelyn Farm (Holiday cottages?) and then at the junction at SO 059 251 turn right, uphill.

400m later, there is a drive leading to Tynllwyn farm. NB. Older maps show the RoW passing over this track but it has been legally diverted, to everybody's advantage. Continue up the tarmac lane for another junction at 058 245 and turn left. Enjoy, all the way to Llanfrynach.

From llanfrynach to Tal y Bont it is not unknown for people to be seen riding along the towpath, especially as it passes a number of excellent beer gardens.

Chippy, the route we did is on this page, not sure if it's any use to you?
mtbsharp
I actually had the copy of MBR it came from so took the pull out guide.
You'd still need the OS map as well with that though.
A couple of lasses we met seemed to be following the same route instructions but in a vertebrate graphics book.

It included the descent through the woods bit but we missed it and came back on the road as we were flagging by that point!

"the stony and often overgrown trail that forks right just past the first farm track at the bottom of the Gap descent"

I like that bit, though you get scratched to bits!

I see where you mean; thanks for that info. Yes I tend to slowly trundle along the towpath ๐Ÿ˜ณ . I see there are also bridleways on both banks on upper Nant Menasgyn into Cwn Oergwm, and they look like defined tracks on the satellite view. Is it worth including these in your opinion?

If you want a bonus climb they are there to be done, although I must admit I never have. There is a definate feature linking the two tracks up at the upper end, but it may be a drystone wall for all I can see from the air-photo. Well worth a gander m'thinks.

I will email a .gpx to those interested in the Gap route.

GPX would be useful. My email is in my profile. I might come over the bridge from Somerset on Saturday to do the Gap again. It's got a classic ride feel about it.
