Hi All,

I have an issue with my Avid Code's brake caliper fowling the frame on my 456, unfortunately it is causing one of the brake pads to rub and I can't centre it properly due to the caliper touching the frame.

The last three pictures in this album,

show the problem.

One of the bolts that holds the caliper halves together is what is fowling on the frame, I was thinking of filing it down by a few mm just to give me a bit of wiggle room, but I am sure there will be issues I haven't thought of doing this.

Any thoughts?

caliper fowling frame

tell it to duck ๐Ÿ˜‰

They do some alternate dropouts that put the caliper outside the rear triangle - give them a ring, I'm sure they'll sort you out.

Take your bolt to your local friendly engineering workshop and ask them to trim 1.5mm from the head of the bolt. It'll still work just fine and it'll cost you the best part of a pack of biscuits. Otherwise grab a file and rock on. Head depth is not particularly important in this situation and providing you leave enough there to not round in future when undoing it there will be no issues at all.

Get the file out man. Only needs a gnats knacker off the bolt head.

Just file a bit of the bolt head away, it looks like there will still be plenty of metal left for the bolt to do its job and for the hex key to engage.

Trust me, I'm a mechanic. It's what I would do.

On the other hand,if you want to do it the posh way, get some of these.

No idea if something like this would be the correct spec re size / standing up to the forces but the head shape might work.

Well that was easy. Half an hour with a decent file was all that was needed!

Unfortunately I may have got a bit carried away with the retightening of the bolt, though.... I may need to order a new bolt when I need to take them apart to service them properly!!!!

Another problem now, the girlfriends rear wheel needs a service, unfortunately I can't get the bloody cassette off. I've even put a breaker bar on the cassette lock nut and extra length of tube on the chain whip to give me some extra leverage....
