I would take the road bike. There are some decent ish MTB spots but you need a car really to get to them, depending on where you will be based. Rockets and rascals and what used to be Extreme in Poole do guided MTB rides,puddletown And st Catherines hill both being good to thrash round . Some nice coastal rides too but its xc mincing At its finest.
Or, take the MTB , pump the tyres up and do both !
