I need a bit of guidance from your collective wisdom. I am planning a trip to Les Arcs this summer and am booking our own chalet through HomeAway website. All sorted and about to pay the deposit but the homeowner has asked for homeowners insurance or proof that I am insured for rental of the property. Have any of you ever been asked for this or can enlighten me on what on earth to look for.

Not some kind of daft French rule is it?

Edit: This claims it is, but then it's trying to flog insurance http://www.theluberon.com/insurance

Does say you may have cover as part of travel insurance though. Check for liability cover in your travel insurance. On top of that your own home insurance 3rd party liability might cover it? Not sure about overseas though.

Agreed, I've emailed him back asking about it though I do see a section on the website offering this insurance, comes in at about £10 per head for the week so it's not that pricey. I think I will maybe go with option two which is a lot less flash and not as handy but owned by a Scottish family.

Keeping it in the UK!

We will be insuring our trip with snow card or similar and I see they have liability insurance included, I wonder would this be sufficient?

I've rented about 20 French chalets over the years, some through agencies some direct with owner. Never been asked for this.

Tell me to stay well clear! Security deposit on arrival is €850 plus € 120 cleaning deposit, all very expensive (refundable if we don't trash the place) lovely chalet just off the side of black 8 trail though

Sorted, for future reference incase anyone else has this issue and stumbles across it on encyclopaedia singletrack. Your travel insurance covers this and a copy of it will be fine, it is something French house insurance has as default apparently. They are insured for damaging someone's property accidentally. Clumsy people?

Will be there from the 25th, but with White Room for the first week. Looking for a chalet for the second week.

Sod that. Booked with VBRO for 7 nights in a nice apartment in Ft Lauderdale, Flordida. Deposit was 300 USD, returned promptly. No discussion on insurance. You can tell a lot from the owner's attitude from their emails etc, so if it smells fishy, leave it.

Plenty of options available - don't stop looking unless you are happy with Scotland option.

OP - have you booked Chalet Ecosse? I'm trying to work out where it is exactly.

Edit - found it!
