Here we go again just over one years riding XC (of which six month does'nt count due to knee op) I need to change my bottom bracket, this time it was a crankbros cobalt bought new from a guy on of here last may (must check out the five year warranty).
Do external BBs' last longer and are they maintainable also what ones represent good value, are the different makes of BBs' and crank arms compatible or is the only sensible solution to go back to square taper, loose balls and plenty of grease.

You'll get differing opinions, but PERSONALLY I find external shimano BB & cranks to be great.

Previously on ISIS 6 months out a BB was a personal record, with 3 months not being uncommon. My first shimano external BB (with a pair of LX cranks) lasted 18 months, with a quick pop of the seals and regrease at 12 months. Least I've had out a BB is 12 months now, which is fine by me.
