I've always just used shimano hollow tech bbs and chainsets, and know the rules with spacers on 68 and 73mm bb shells.
I picked up an old marin quake bike today and its got a weird howitzer xr bb that seems to be very wide. Are there extra-wide bb standards? The shell itself seems to be standard width, but the bb seems to have very wide bearing flanges. Does that mean that a normal hollowtech bb and chainset won't do the job?
